Description of the course
Researchers prefer not to consider the risks which can be caused by their own work in the laboratory. They distance themselves from the possible work-related risks using various arguments, such as: it should be fine, before me they did it in this way, we want to use the same technique as the research group we collaborate with. Sometimes these arguments are valid, but there is no harm in looking critically at the risks. And this does not only involve the risk of fires or explosions. More and more scientific research has shown that in fact, exposures which have taken place in the past can have deleterious effects on the long term.

This one day course provides guidelines for the objective assessment of these risks and, based on this knowledge, the application of the right measures according to the occupational hygiene strategy. On the one hand this is a refresher course, but on the other hand it will become clear to the participant which technical and organizational measures have been taken within the LUMC to perform research responsibly. Which requirements should a laboratory meet? Where can I find safety information? Which rules apply and why? All these matters have been arranged within the LUMC, but they may not be entirely clear yet.

Content
The course will start with risk perception: which factors motivate risk-taking? This will be followed by a good approach to risks: if we cannot remove the cause, then what will be the next step? Subsequently, several topics will be discussed in more detail: dangerous substances, biological agents, radioactive substances and the environment. The day will be ended with an example case.
